Pande[a]mo Project
The COVID-19 pandemic that broke out in 2020 brought us face to face with an unprecedented social phenomenon, that of lockdown. Back then, time, if not static, was certainly dilated, heavy, unwieldy. It degenerated into an emotive unit of measurement, since it now contained the whispers of our souls.
This photographic documentary is not only unique in terms of its historical value, but also unique, in that it constitutes a valuable archive of Athens that will forever stand as a reminder of the dystopia we worldwide shared but also of human strength.
All the photos were shot during nighttime and capture the urban landscape through the eyes of a stray animal. For me, Photography worked as an unparalleled medium, a helpful, free and effortless way to process, metabolise and sublimate this violently rapid change in the lives of all of us. These photographs will forever speak very differently to each and everyone of us; this is precisely what constitutes their value timeless.
Through my lens, life in the urban landscape can be seen as something much more than a daily routine, for daily routine is loudly absent during this time. My photographs have a eucharistic character and exude the tenderness of a man who, himself overwhelmed by the pandemic, placed his ‘stethoscope lens’ on the flesh of the city to listen to her faint pulse in her most difficult hours and to hold her hand tenderly, until she was on her feet again.
